Bendigo Student Council
Alana Tagliabue

Hello my fellow La Trobian students! My name is Alana. I’m a nursing and midwifery student, and I believe university should be about growth, fun, and finding your place, not just lectures and deadlines.
I’m nominating myself to represent students who often feel overlooked such as us in regional areas and from my lived experience as a neurodivergent student juggling parenting and other responsibilities.
I’m passionate about promoting cultural inclusiveness and making everyone feel welcome, which is especially important today.
I love to say I’m an old lady at 42 but young at heart. One perk of neurodivergence is finding adventure in everyday life, so having fun matters to me. I also know it’s okay not to have life all figured out.
Here in Bendigo, it can feel like we miss out on the full uni experience. That needs to change. We deserve the same opportunities, support, and community vibe as the main campus.
If you’ve felt left out or unheard, I’m here to speak up for you!
Gaurav Girish

I am excited to nominate myself for the Bendigo Student Council. Living on campus has given me the opportunity to connect with students every day, and as someone who enjoys talking and listening to people, I have naturally become a go-to guy for many of my peers. Whether it’s a quick chat or a serious conversation about challenges we face, I value hearing different perspectives and believe these interactions could shape the way our student council makes decisions.
Beyond academics, I actively take part in university life. I play badminton at weekly socials at the university gym. These activities have helped me build friendships across different groups and understand the importance of community in student life.
If elected, my goal is to ensure that every student feels represented and supported. I want to strengthen communication between students and the administration, improve campus facilities, and encourage more inclusive events that bring us together.
I am committed to being approachable, transparent, and proactive. I will do my part to make La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus a place where all students can thrive, not just academically but socially and personally.
Juancan Luo – ELECTED UNOPPOSED (nomination round 1)

As an international student at the Bendigo campus, I understand the challenges and opportunities that come with studying in a new environment. As a woman and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I value diversity and inclusion and want every student to feel safe and respected.
With previous student union experience and three years of working across departments and international time zones, I bring strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. I will use these to advocate for better support services, inclusive events, and more opportunities for students to connect, grow, and succeed.
I am outgoing, approachable, and committed to listening with empathy. My goal is not only to represent students but also to be a supportive friend who helps build a welcoming and vibrant community at La Trobe Bendigo.
Louise Hocking – ELECTED UNOPPOSED (nomination round 1)

I am a third year dental student and although my free time is limited, I have a real heart to serve my community. I would love to help connect students to other students and bring students together as its in community where we as people can really thrive. This is why I would like to be an LTSA member as it is an easy way to serve my community and fill a need within the Latrobe community.
Paige Fuller

My name is Paige Louise, I am a first-year student in the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours), and my belief is all voices deserve to be heard, as is indeed the belief of many others.
For those who struggle to build connections and thrive in university are the voices we need to help speak louder. As a first-year myself, transitioning to university has been difficult and not what I expected. It has been lonely, the work-load has been excessive, and the memories of high school are already slipping away. University is not a linear experience, meaning that some may already be thriving which is amazing. But, for those who are struggling to meet with that ‘prime uni experience’, it’s you I want to connect with the most.
I can’t say I have the most experience, but what I can say is that I’m real and passionate. I aim to give students more opportunities to connect with each other and be supported throughout their uni experience as no one should ever have to feel alone or like no one understands them.
If elected, I will be the voice for those who feel too shadowed to use their own. Thank you 🙂
Rebecca Barrow

As a postgraduate Master of Nursing Practice student, I would like to be nominated to be a member of the La Trobe University Student Council in Bendigo. I would contribute to the development of policies that promote equity, inclusion, and student wellbeing. I am particularly committed to ensuring that the voices of vulnerable and underrepresented students are embedded within decision-making processes.
Through my lived experience, I have been a strong advocate for individuals with complex disabilities, many of whom face unique challenges that directly affect their capacity to participate fully in academic life. These experiences have equipped me with insight into the barriers that exist within higher education and the importance of responsive, student-centred policy. I believe student representation must extend beyond consultation to active advocacy that drives institutional change.
I would work collaboratively to influence policies that reflect the evolving needs of our student population. This includes advancing accessibility, fostering inclusive teaching and learning environments, and embedding flexible practices that acknowledge the diverse responsibilities students carry.
I am dedicated to ensuring that all students can learn, grow, and thrive. I will advocate with integrity, transparency, and passion to strengthen La Trobe’s culture of equity and excellence,
Thank you.

Ishan Patel – ELECTED UNOPPOSED (nomination round 1)

I Ishan Patel,

I believe that effective council participation should be guided by the principles of inclusivity, accountability, and collaboration. Raschael Stephen

I am nominating myself for the LTSA International Student Council (City Campus) with the goal of making the City campus feel more like a vibrant, hub of community, rather than a building merely to attend classes, grab a coffee and head home.
If elected, I will focus on:
1. Connectivity and collaboration, where I will work for more collaboration between campuses, particularly Bundoora, as it is the closest and the campus with most events.
2. More on-campus events, from student mixers to career expos, to make sure the postgraduate students don’t miss out because of the distance. I will advocate for the inclusion of the City students, as a significant amount of them feel left out of the “University Experience” they were eagerly looking forward to.
My priority is to bring students together right where we study, which is the City campus, as every student deserves fairness and convenience to access activities and events as other campuses, no matter their location.

Manjot Singh

My name is Manjot Singh, currently pursuing a Master of Education (Leadership & Management) at La Trobe University. As a Gold Medalist from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, I have always valued academic excellence, but I also understand that success goes beyond grades—it requires emotional and mental well-being.
As an international student myself, I have experienced the challenges of being away from family, managing studies, part-time work, and the feelings of loneliness and pressure that often come with this journey. Many students silently struggle with stress, anxiety, and low motivation when things don’t go as expected.
If elected, my focus will be to promote mental health and well-being for all students. I aim to initiate workshops on stress management, introduce yoga and mindfulness practices on campus, and create more events that bring students together to build connections and support networks.
My vision is to help students achieve a healthy study-life balance that not only enhances their university experience but also equips them with lifelong tools for emotional resilience and personal growth. Together, we can build a happier, healthier, and more connected student community.
Maria Francis

As an international student, I understand firsthand the challenges of navigating a new country, culture, and academic system. My policy focuses on enhancing support services that directly address the most pressing needs of our international community.
Primary help required includes clearer access to mental health resources, academic support tailored to diverse learning backgrounds, and financial guidance for managing living expenses. Many students struggle with isolation, homesickness, and adapting to unfamiliar teaching styles—issues that deserve proactive solutions.
Information is key. I propose the creation of a centralized digital hub that provides up-to-date guidance on visa regulations, housing options, job opportunities, and emergency contacts. This platform should be multilingual and accessible from day one.
Airport services are a crucial first touchpoint. I advocate for a coordinated airport welcome desk during peak arrival periods, offering transportation assistance, SIM card setup, and orientation materials. A warm welcome sets the tone for a successful transition.
International students bring vibrancy and global perspective to our campus. Yet many face language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and limited social integration. My goal is to ensure every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive academically and personally. Together, we can build a more inclusive and informed student experience.
Moherika San

Innovation – using my IT background to explore practical ways technology can improve access to resources, whether through online guides, platforms, or digital events.
If elected, I will listen to students, amplify their voices, and work collaboratively to create a supportive and inclusive environment where every international student feels they belong.

At La Trobe, I carry these qualities forward by taking initiative in group settings, ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.

Student representation must go beyond raising concerns; it should actively shape solutions. If elected, I will work to improve communication between students and leadership, ensuring transparency in decision-making and timely responses to student needs. I aim to promote better academic support, such as accessible resources for assignments, workshops on emerging technologies, and initiatives that help students transition smoothly into the workforce.
Mental health and well-being are equally important. I will advocate for stronger support networks, peer-to-peer programmes, and activities that enhance social connection, particularly for international and first-year students adjusting to campus life.
Finally, I will support sustainability and innovation on campus, encouraging greener practices while promoting digital tools that make student life easier. With your support, I will work tirelessly to make La Trobe a place where every student feels supported, empowered, and inspired.

For me, student representation is about being fair, inclusive and accountable. My policy is to strengthen the voice of all students especially international students. By ensuring their concerns are heard and acted on those would be main focus for me. This will assure themselves that LTSA Council is working for them.
I will focus on support services that make student life easier and meaningful. This includes academic assistance, career development, networking opportunities and access to mental health resources. For international students, I will advocate for clearer guidance on studies, work rights, housing, financial management and pathways after graduation. My goal is to ensure every student feels supported both inside and outside the classroom.
I also want to create more opportunities for cultural exchange, student-led events and seminars that build confidence. Every student should feel welcome and empowered to participate. I will ensure they find the right way or suggestion for making their student life smoother.
If I am elected, I want LTSA to be open, approachable, and focused on students first. I will take the time to listen, show empathy and work hard to achieve results

I am applying for the LTSA 2025 because I believe my leadership skills, strong work ethic and positive outlook will allow me to make a meaningful contribution. Throughout my career in education, I have always led with a “get it done” attitude. I take pride in motivating those around me, building trust and creating environments where collaboration and respect are at the centre. I approach challenges with confidence and persistence, while also paying close attention to the finer details that ensure the success of any initiative.
I see myself as a leader who listens, communicates clearly and empowers others to grow. I thrive when coordinating projects and bringing people together to achieve shared goals, and I consistently follow through to make sure plans turn into real outcomes. My ability to balance vision with practical steps has been a strength in my work so far, and it is something I am eager to bring into LTSA 2025.
At the same time, I am continuing to grow professionally as a student in the Master of Education (Leadership and Management). This ongoing study is expanding my knowledge and practice, and I am committed to applying what I learn to inspire positive change.
Sarvesh Kumar

I am currently a second-year Bachelor of Information Technology student with a strong interest in leadership and community engagement. Having been actively involved in the student body for a long time, I am eager to bring my experience, enthusiasm, and organizational skills to the LTSA. I am passionate about creating opportunities for students to connect and would love to contribute by hosting engaging events across Melbourne.
Sayuni Jayasinghe

I am Sayuni Jayasinghe, a second year student studying Bachelor of information technology majoring in Data Science. My main motivation behind joining the La Trobe Student Association comes from a genuine desire to represent the student voice and to make the university life more supportive, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. I want to be someone who students feel comfortable approaching with not only with their ideas but also with the concerns they have regarding anything, knowing that I will listen and advocate on their behalf.
As an international student myself, I understand how important it is to feel connected and included within a diverse community. As a representative I would like to help strengthen those connections across different student groups so that everyone feels a real sense of belonging here at La Trobe.
I would be grateful for this opportunity as it will also give me the chance to grow alongside my peers while contributing to initiatives that support academic success, career development and especially the student wellbeing. With empathy, teamwork and new ideas, I hope to create a safe and vibrant environment where every student feels valued, included and confident that their voice matters.
Taniya Valery Jeyanesan

My name is Taniya Valery, and I am nominating myself for the Student Council because I am passionate about representing student voices and making our campus a supportive, engaging, and inclusive environment.
If I get elected I will make sure to improve, communication between students and staff, cause I see that many students are shy to speak up in the classes.
Also I will make sure that we all become one community instead of just dividing ourselves from each other, for example there are many students who just speak to people their same nationality, and I want to change that. We all are one community in the same university, there should not be diversity.
And so many things that will be useful in the future to make La Trobe the best place to students ( In my opinion La Trobe is the best place to students, we just have to make sure to get the right mindset to students, to engage with each other and valued)
With my past experience at school as a Senior prefect and as a Student representative (SRC) at La Trobe college I believe I can do an amazing work.
Thank you
Yana Beniwal

As a student on city campus , i feel we don’t have as much as activities as any other campus does and travelling can be issues for people. My main focus would be make sure i can contribute in coming up with ideas for the city campus so they can actually get the feel of living a university life. They can make connections and contribute to the university somehow.
As a member itself I always have had feedbacks regarding the activities and trips i have been a part of, so i feel i have gathered a good third person perspective and i can be asset to help in future projects.
I feel the team is already on good path and I want to be an addition and help it make better for everyone.
Yasuri Kavishka Mannatunga

As an international student candidate, my policy is grounded in inclusivity, fairness, and transparency, ensuring that every international student, regardless of background or nationality, has an equal voice in our community. Alongside being an international student, I am also a teacher, and I bring with me valuable skills such as clear communication, patience, organization, problem-solving, and the ability to listen and support others. If elected, I will use these strengths to represent students thoughtfully, promote cultural diversity, strengthen support systems, and create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. With integrity and accountability, I will work to ensure the voices of international students are heard and respected.
Yuchen Guo

my name is Elvis Guo, and I’m running for Student Council.
As an international student, I know what it feels like to step into a new environment—exciting, but sometimes challenging. That’s why I want to make our campus a place where every student, no matter their background, feels welcome, supported, and heard.
If elected, I’ll focus on three things:
First, building a more inclusive community through events that bring people together and celebrate our diversity.
Second, strengthening support for students—whether it’s academic, financial, or wellbeing—by pushing for clearer, more accessible resources.
Third, making sure your voices count. I will listen, share your concerns, and make sure they reach the right people.
I believe leadership is about service. With your support, I will work to make our campus not just a place where we study, but a place where we truly belong.
Thank you!
